Clive’s Cumbrian Way, is a stunning two-day challenge cycle ride round the county of Cumbria. Named in honour of Clive Jenkin, a Cockermouth man who passed away from motor neurone disease in early 2010, Clive’s Cumbrian Way is set become a regular fixture on the UK sportive cycling calendar.
This serious cycle challenge covers 276 miles, starting just outside the picturesque Cumbrian market town of Cockermouth, heading up to the Solway coast before turning towards Carlisle. During the first day the riders cover approximately 156 miles as they head north west, before turning south and passing through Brampton, Langwathby, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Sedburgh before reaching the coast and the charming seaside town of Arnside.
The riders break in Arnside, for the night where they set up camp in the local youth hostel. Here they reflect on their day in the saddle while stealing themselves for the day to come.
In the morning the pelotons head north along the coast for the remaining 120 miles back to Cockermouth, passing through Grange-over-Sands, Barrow, Millom and Whitehaven, before rendezvousing at a local pub just outside of town. Here the rider’s refresh and regroup before covering the final three miles under police escort back to the start point at the Cockermouth Sheep and Wool Centre.
Clive’s Cumbrian Way was founded by Raymond Paterson and friends from the Honister 92 cycling club. They wanted to do something to remember Clive while helping others, by raising money for CFM's Cash For Kids. While the organisers would very much appreciate if everyone could raise a minimum of £50.00 for CFM's Cash For Kids they understand that not everyone is able or comfortable in doing so, and so this is not an entry requirement.
They wanted to create something different that was challenging but inclusive and not just the preserve of elite club riders. Clive’s Cumbrian Way is a serious challenge for serious riders, but unlike other events and races, there are three separate groups of riders catering to a range of different levels from the elite to serious club cyclists.
This challenge ride is fully supported and it is therefore important that riders are honest about their ability, selecting the correct group. This allows the riders to stay together making Clive’s Cumbrian Way an incredibly friendly event full of camaraderie, where everyone has a good time.
